New Students to the District » Elementary Schools
If you want to register your child for the 2012-2013 school year
If your child is new to the District, and you would like to enroll your child at any of our elementary schools for the 2012-2013 school year, the first opportunity to register will be Monday April 16, and Tuesday April 17, 2012. Registration takes place at your school of residence. Regisration packets will be available for pick-up beginning Friday, March 23, 2012 at your school of residence. When you pick up your registration packet, you will sign up for a specific appointment time on either April 16 or 17 to complete your registration. No packets will be available at the district office. If you are unsure which is your school of residence, please contact 626-441-5810 X1120 and ask to verify your address and the corresponding elementary school/school of residence. If you would like to verify that your address is in South Pasadena, please visit the District Lookup website, and enter your address and it will identify the school district pertaining to your address.
The information below pertains to South Pasadena residents only. Working in South Pasadena does not constitute residency.
Please be aware that as a resident of South Pasadena, your children are guaranteed a spot in one of our three elementary schools; student placement is determined within each home school of residence by date and time of registration. After New Family Registration takes place on April 16 and 17, and all data has been entered into the computer, three Individual lotteries will take place on Friday April 27, 2012; one for each school, by grade level, with all the names of students registered during New Family Registration on April 16 and 17, 2012. This lottery is open to the public (i.e., the parents of the students who have registered on April 16 and 17), but you are not required to attend. Siblings enrolling in grades K-5 are given priority registration and are not a part of the lottery process. Please be aware that as a resident of South Pasadena, your children are guaranteed a spot in one of our three elementary schools; the lottery is used to place students who live in each school's attendance area. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) handout will be available at the lottery to help parents interpret their lottery number and to understand the process of student placement. After the April 16 & 17, 2012 registration dates, student placement is determined at each school of residence by date and time of registration. For additional information about the school district, please visit the "District Policies" option, then "General Info about SPUSD" option. Elementary schools will be open until June 22, 2012 and then will be closed for the summer. There will be one opportunity to register in mid-July at the District Office, and several opportunities to register in August at the District Office prior to the start of school. It is possible that your student will not be able to be placed at their home school for the 2012-2013 school year, especially in grades K- 3 where class size is limited to 20 students per class. We will make our best effort to place siblings together at the same school, but this is not always possible.
You may not register for school until you reside in South Pasadena and have your appropriate three proofs of residence, and registration must be done by the parent or legal guardian of the child.
Incoming Kindergarten students for the 2012-2013 school year must be 5 years old by November 1, 2012. This is per California Education Code (48000a), and no exceptions will be made. Incoming Kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year must be 5 years old by October 1, 2013. Incoming Kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 school year must by 5 years old by September 1, 2014. After this date, September 1 will be the annual cut-off date for all incoming kindergarten students.
If you child will turn 5 between November 2 and December 2, 2012, and is affected by the new cut-off date for kindergarten, please come to the District Office, Room 4, on any of the following dates: March 6, 7 or 8, 2012 between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., to complete a Transitional Kindergarten Information Form. Please bring your child's birth certificate or passport, and photo id establishing you as the parent as well as proof of your South Pasadena resident status, i.e. your California driver's license. If you do not know about Transitional Kindergarten, please click on the attached link for more information:
Please remember that all incoming students who have moved here from out of state or out of the country will need to provide proof of the immunizations required by California law, and a Mantoux (Mtx) TB test given within the past year if enrolling for the 2011-2012 school year. If the Mtx test is positive, you will need proof of a negative chest x-ray. If you need help in obtaining the Mtx test or vaccines, you may contact the Monrovia Health Services Clinic at 626-256-1600. They provide a free Mantoux TB test and other immunizations for children. Please note: as of July 1, 2012, the TB test and reading will no longer be required of students enrolling in SPUSD schools.
If you are the legal guardian of a student, or are residing in a "Dual Family Residency" (two families sharing a residence), you will need to contact the Office of Personnel at 626-441-5810 X1130 for an appointment prior to registering your child(ren). The Personnel Office has set aside Thursday, March 8, 2012 as the day for new family Dual Family Residency and Guardianship approvals, and an appointment is required.
